What is The Little Yogi?

The Little Yogi is developmentally appropriate yoga for children ages 2.5-7. Older students welcome on a case by case basis. The Little Yogi offers “Yoga With Me” classes for children and their grown-ups and Kids Yoga classes in 6 or 8 week sessions. The Little Yogi offers group classes to childcare centers, preschools, birthday parties, private playgroups, sports teams, and more. The Little Yogi was born from a passion for Early childhood education intersecting with a love for yoga! My goal is to take playful yoga poses and set them to music that will evoke feelings of happiness, peace and calm in your child; Making it easier for your child to recall during moments of stress, frustration or sadness and allowing them to start to regulate their emotions on their own. Each class will incorporate developmentally appropriate mindfulness activities. This may be learning how to take deep breaths or longer meditations and affirmations. I believe yoga is for everyone! Our goal in all classes is for kids to feel comfortable and engaged, and to walk out of class with their bodies, minds, and hearts feeling balanced and peaceful.

Why Yoga for Kids?

The benefits of yoga aren’t just for adults, even the littlest yogi can benefit from moving and stretching their bodies, practicing how to remain calm and peaceful in any environment through breathing and mindfulness. Our post-pandemic lives are full of anxiety especially in social situations. Yoga and mindfulness gives children the tools they need to navigate the stress of it all.

Recent studies have shown that some of the benefits of yoga for kids are:

BENEFIT #1

Teaching yoga to young children improves flexibility, balance, strength and reduces the chance of injury on the playground or in sports.

BENEFIT #2

Practicing yoga has academic benefits as well, when a child crosses the midline of the body doing a yoga pose such as a twist, it promotes communication between both hemispheres of the brain. Activities such as reading, writing and tying our shoes use controlled and complex movements and yoga strengthens the muscles needed to complete those tasks.

BENEFIT #3

Practicing mindfulness with young children improves self regulation skills. When they can label emotions and learn how to control them they are less likely to struggle with challenging behaviors.

BENEFIT 4

Mindfulness reduces anxiety and depression and increases compassion.

Need a little more convincing about what yoga can do for your child?

When your child steps on his/her mat with us, these are the goals we try to work towards with each and every yoga class we teach …

To give your child tools to control stress.

We begin every class with breathing exercises. Your child will learn how to use these breathing techniques to slow down his heart rate and calm his mind in times of anxiety, distraction, stress, and anger. It’s a tool he can carry with him to handle any difficult life situation.

To help boost your child's confidence.

We see it. When your child learns how to control her body and flow successfully through yoga poses, it does wonders for her self-esteem. She becomes more poised and starts to believe in her abilities. And We’re there with her to cheer her on every step of the way.

To improve your child's concentration skills.

We end every class with a short, guided meditation. This helps your child learn how to sit (or lie) still in one place and focus, lengthening his attention span. This will help him at school when his mind tends to wander and he gets distracted easily.

To improve your child's flexibility, coordination, strength, and balance.

This means fewer accidental falls on the playground, and less-severe injuries … which is super beneficial if your child is an athlete.

To let your child feel part of a healthy, non-competitive group.

Your child will discover that bodies are different, and different bodies do different things. That’s okay. Nobody is better or worse at yoga … we’re all practicing and learning together. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses.

The Little Yogi in Action

The Mission of The Little Yogi

It's waaay more than just teaching your child tree pose.

At The Little Yogi, Our goal is to introduce children to the benefits and joys of yoga, creative movement, and mindfulness. Every class offered will be filled with yoga poses, games, stories, and songs to help children improve their strength, balance, coordination, body awareness, and flexibility in a fun, kid-friendly way.

We also strongly believe in the emotional benefits of yoga and will introduce children (even the littlest at age three) to meditative practices and breathing exercises that they can use to calm their bodies and minds on – and off – the mat.

Let us unroll a mat for your child in one of our next classes!
The Little Yogi is excited to be partnering with the Cincinnati Public Library in Price Hill to bring the community free children's yoga classes starting July 3rd at 2:00 PM. These classes are sponsored by Price Hill Wellness Community Action Team!

Its creator, bestselling author Teresa Power, says about 11, 575 kids will spend five minutes at schools and other places doing fun yoga poses and celebrating fitness.  Kids’ Yoga Day Ambassador The Little Yogi will be holding an official event at Shiloh UMC.

Cincinnati, Ohio—On April 5th, from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. local time, thousands of schoolchildren around the world, will put down their books and let their imaginations run free as they mold themselves into trees, flamingos, windmills, kites, and other kid-friendly yoga positions. They will be joined by other children at home and other locations, all led by more than 200 official ambassadors, including local Candace Rhoill It’s all part of the annual Kids’ Yoga Day, now celebrating its eighth year.  Since the first Kids’ Yoga Day in 2016, over 480,000 children in dozens of countries have participated.

Kids’ Yoga Day creator, internationally recognized yoga expert and author of The ABCs of Yoga for Kids and Little Mouse Adventures series, Teresa Power says few people understand how powerful yoga can be. More than a great way to become fit, she says parents who practice yoga with their children get a bonus: stronger relationships with them. “When you both do something healthy and fun, you will get closer,” she observes, noting that the type of yoga she favors is playful and does not involve chanting.

Kids’ Yoga Day is being celebrated locally at on April 5th at 5:00 p.m. at Shiloh UMC. This class is open to the public but limited space is available. I believe yoga should be meet the student where they are at developmentally, spiritually and physically in order to lay the foundation of self regulation that will last a lifetime.  By participating in Kids’ Yoga Day, kids will experience first-hand how good they can feel, both physically and mentally, from just five minutes of yoga,” says Candace.
